Yamaha AW16G Professional Audio Workstation
by J.D. Casey, 8.01.2003
A little over 20 years ago, TASCAM set the bar with their Portastudio. That "box" spawned an entire category of "studio-in-a-box" products providing affordable creative tools for songwriters and musicians. Today, Yamaha raises the bar with their AW16G, which blazes new trails in digital economics. Most certainly, the AW16G takes advantage of the drill-down technology found in Yamaha's more costly big and bigger brother digital audio workstations, the AW2416 and AW4416 more

Weiss DS1-MK2 Dynamics Processor
by Bob Katz, 7.01.2003
While I was working as a freelance mastering engineer, I was privileged to use and lust over Daniel Weiss's 102 modular series of dynamics processors at various high-end mastering studios. But after opening my own room, I felt I could not afford the down-payment to get started in the Weiss world. more

Peavey Freq-Out
by Will James, 7.01.2003
For many years Peavey has manufactured affordable, time-tested musical items. They have, in the past few years, ventured into the installation market, in addition to their current presence in the portable systems market, by introducing a new line of product called the Architectural Acoustics line. This product is one of those Architectural Acoustics items, called the Freq-Out. more

Otari FS-96 Converter
by Dr. Frederick Bashour, 4.01.2003
From my original Digital Domain FCN-1E, VSP-PRO and Spectral Translator boxes of the mid-90s, to the Kurzweil DMTi, Z-Systems z32.32r, M-Audio S.A.M., Apogee Trak2 and Merging Technologies Onouris units I have reviewed to the various digital patchbays I've put together over the years, I seem to have accumulated a rather large number of such gizmos. But still, I have no box in my studio which does as many things as simply and as elegantly as the Otari FS-96 ($3,499). more

Klark Teknik DN9340 Helix Digital Equalizer
by Will James, 3.01.2003
Is there a better, more reliable EQ than the Klark Teknik DN360 or the DN27? Klark Teknik may have surpassed even its own industry standard graphic EQs with the introduction of the digital function EQ, the DN9340 Helix ($3,663). more

Genex GXA8/GXD8 Converters
by Dr. Frederick Bashour, 9.01.2002
In my continuing quest for better sound, I habitually audition every new digital converter I can get my hands on. When I learned that the new pair of Genex converters featured every standard sample rate known to man, plus DSD conversion, I simply had to try them out. more

TC Helicon is a collaboration between TC Electronic of Denmark and IVL Technologies of Canada. TC Electronic's expertise in DSP wizardry is known worldwide; lesser-known IVL pioneered vocal pitch processing with Digitech's near-vintage Vocalist range. more

Yamaha SREV1 Digital Sampling Reverb
by Alan Silverman, 3.01.2002
Shortly after the introduction of real-time sampling-reverb technology to the professional mixing community by SONY with its DRE-777, Yamaha has followed suit with its own offering, the SREV1. These units bring a new level of realism and sophistication to the art of synthesizing reverb in the recording studio. more

Rosendahl Nanosyncs Reference Clock
by Dr. Frederick Bashour, 3.01.2002
It has become common knowledge that, for optimum digital audio sound, it is preferable to use a single, high-quality audio clock reference with multiple outputs, rather than, say, employing the first device in the digital chain to drive everything else downstream in a daisy-chain arrangement. more

Lexicon 960L V2.5/3.0 Effects Processor
by Alan Silverman, 3.01.2002
The recent release of v2.5 software and the imminent release of v3.0 mark the continuing development of Lexicon's flagship multichannel reverb and effects processor. Additional surround reverb algorithms have been added as well as new stereo and multichannel delays. more

TC Electronic Triple C Digital Compressor
by Richard Alan Salz, 12.01.2001
Some of the most coveted compressor/limiters are simple in circuit design, offer few controls and are intuitive to use. The TC Electronic Triple C compressor is not one of those devices. The Triple C, thanks to its multilevel interface, offers nearly unprecedented control over its operational parameters. more

EMM Labs ADC8 & DAC8 DSD/PCM Converters
by Tom Jung, 12.01.2001
As the model numbers might imply, the ADC8 is an eight-channel A-to-D converter while the DAC8 is an eight-channel D-to-A converter. What makes these converters unique is that both are designed to work in either the 1-bit DSD world or in the more well-known PCM domain. more
