Rane PEQ 55 Parametric Equalizer
by Wayne Becker, 3.01.2004
Rane always presents its gear in a colorful aspect that makes the arduous task of reading a manual palatable. They have also been known for innovative and unique products that at sometimes seem to be driven more by the work of mad scientist rather than a marketing department. Their latest product, the PEQ 55 is an analog controlled DSP that combines familiar analog control of digital filters. more

Pendulum Audio QuartetPreamp/Multiprocessor
by Russ Long, 3.01.2003
The relatively new Pendulum Quartet ($3,250) is an all in one recording path. It features the tube mic/DI preamp from the MDP-1, the tube opto compressor from the OCL-2 (which uses Pendulum's proprietary opto-electronic cell), a three-band tube EQ with high and low-shelving and a peaking mid band, and a de-esser which uses opto-inductive filtering and a highly selective detector. more

Peavey Electronics kosmos Sub Harmonic Generator
by Loren Alldrin, 7.01.2002
Better, faster, higher - it seems folks are always wanting more in everything they do. Peavey's kosmos ($299) gratifies the desire for more in yet another direction, lower. more

Sound Enhancements AccuVerb Analog Spring Reverb
by Russ Long, 6.01.2002
Digital effects and processors come close to emulating the sound of vintage microphones, compressors and effects, yet most ears still agree that there is nothing quite like the real thing. Sound Enhancements's AccuVerb ($1,599) analog spring reverb is the real thing. more

Drawmer DS501 Power Gate
by Russ Long, 11.01.2001
When I think of high-quality gates, Drawmer is often the first company to come to mind. Drawmer intends to stay on the forefront of the gate market with the introduction of the DS501 ($899), a dual-channel, stereo linkable noise gate that packs a few new punches. more

Gemini SP-1 Circle Surround Analog Processor
by Sid Vanderpool, 1.01.2001
In the 1990s Rocktron created Circle Surround, a new spin on the surround world that could produce front-channel stereo, rear channel psuedo stereo (with an apparent separation of 30 dB) and a phantom center channel - all from a regular stereo input. SRS Labs of Santa Ana, Calif. later purchased the Circle Surround technology. Gemini incorporates the Circle technology into its new SP-1 surround analog processor. more

Swissonic AD96/DA96 Converters
by Loren Alldrin, 12.01.2000
The recording community is moving toward high-resolution audio recording, thanks in part to the DVD medium. Swissonic's AD96 A/D and DA96 D/A converters, which offer four channels of 24-bit recording at high sample rates (88.2 and 96 kHz) using the MUX processes, are aimed at this emerging market more

BBE's Sonic Maximizer system, now in its fourth generation, continues to be a well-received enhancer in recording studios, live sound setups and musicians' rigs. Producers, engineers and musicians are constantly searching for new devices that tweak or manipulate their sounds. The Metasonix TS-21 Hellfire Modulator processor is one such device that seems a natural for synth-based recordings. more

HHB Radius 3 Fat Man Stereo Tube Compressor
by Jeff Severson, 10.01.2000
Little Feat used to sing about a "fatman in the bathtub with the blues." Now we've got a Fatman crossing the ocean in a purple box: the new Radius 3 Fat Man Stereo Tube Compressor made by Sonic Touch and distributed in the U.S. by HHB (available in the colonies for a mere $469). Let's take this fatboy off his three-rack-space throne and see what he can do. more

dbx 386 Dual Tube Mic Preamp Analog-to-Digital Converter
by Stephen Murphy, 10.01.2000
Despite the fact that, as of the last time I checked, our ears and vocal cords are analog, audio consumers are now able to buy "digital microphones," "digital speakers," "digital power amplifiers" and "digital microphone preamplifiers." While sometimes it makes sense, other times you just have to scratch your head. One of the places digital makes the most sense is in a mic/instrument recording front-end, like the dbx 386. more

Tube Tech SMC 2A Hellfire Modulator Tube Processor
by David Rideau, 10.01.2000
Many of you are quite familiar with Tube Tech, the Danish manufacturer of high-quality pro audio gear in the familiar blue package. The SMC 2A is Tube Tech's latest contribution to its already long list of microphone preamplifiers, equalizers and compressor/limiters, all of which incorporate tubes as the basis of their design. more

Coleman Audio MS8VH Balanced Audio Switcher
by Dr. Frederick Bashour, 4.01.2000
What attracted me to Coleman's boxes was the excellence of their design and the obvious care taken in their construction. Here, at last, was a line of control room switchers that would not compromise the sound quality of a source, nor affect it in any weird way by terminating it with an unbalanced load. more

Pendulum Audio 6386 Variable Mu Tube Limiter
by Russ Long, 3.01.2000
The Fairman TMC compressor/limiter created a buzz last year with its Fairchild-reminiscent appearance and sound quality. Pendulum has taken the buzz a step further with its 6386 Variable Mu Tube Limiter. more

Lucid Technology AD9624 and DA9624 Converter
by Dr. Frederick Bashour, 12.01.1999
When I was assigned to review this set of 96 kHz Lucid converter boxes, I was a bit underwhelmed. High-end audiophile engineer that I am, I thought that these little Symetrix-built Lucid units might be cute, but hardly distinguished. Turns out I was wrong - these boxes sounded very nice and, in fact, proved to be among the most useful gadgets I had with me at my recent weeklong Denver recording extravaganza. more
